Staley Cleared to Play Against Air Force
PROVO -- Brigham Young University announced today that running back Luke Staley is eligible to play in Saturday's Homecoming game against Air Force.
Athletic department officials reviewed Staley's case with the NCAA and the Mountain West Conference office on Monday, and it was determined that no violation of NCAA rules occurred. Staley was withheld from Saturday's game as a precautionary measure because the University had concerns he may have dropped below the 12-credit-hour limit.
The NCAA agreed that the class Staley added could be counted toward his 12-hour total based upon NCAA bylaw 14.1.6.2.3, which states that a non-credit class may be counted toward fulfilling the minimum full-time enrollment under certain situations.
"We are happy for Luke and for our football team that this situation was resolved in such a satisfactory manner," said BYU Athletic Director Val Hale. "This also serves as a wake-up call to us. We will implement a number of safeguards to ensure this cannot happen again."
