PROVO, Utah - The No. 8 BYU Cougars drew a 0-0 tie against the Ohio State Buckeyes in the 2017 season home opener Monday night at South Field.

“We wanted to get off to a strong start with a lot of energy and a lot of emotion, and I thought we did that tonight,” BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. “I thought this was our best performance overall, but we have to be a little more consistent.”

Madie Siddoway recorded the first Cougar shot in the fourth minute from just outside the goal box. Her shot just missed the crossbar, but was one of the best first-half opportunities for BYU.

Elise Flake took a shot from just outside the left corner of the 18-yard box in the 39th minute. The ball slammed into the right post, barely keeping the Cougars from getting on the board.

Neither Ohio State or BYU scored in the first half, and both had five shots heading into the break.

Lizzy Braby took two shots in the second half. Her shot from the right just outside the 18-yard box went over the crossbar, while a straight shot to the goal in the 61st minute ended in the keeper’s hands.

Rachel Bingham drove the ball up the field and passed to Nadia Gomes for a shot in the 77th minute that went left of the goal.

The second half ended with 13 Cougar shots and seven for the Buckeyes, but no goals, sending the game into overtime.

The first half of overtime held shots from Gomes and Braby. Hannah Clark had two saves; one in the third minute and a second off a corner kick in the 10th minute.

One more shot in the second half of overtime from Flake grazed the far right post. Neither team managed a golden goal, as both teams wound up with clean sheets.
