BYU opens regular season on the road at Cal State Fullerton and Nebraska

PROVO, Utah ­­— The BYU women’s soccer team kicks off regular season competition at Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Aug. 17 before traveling to Nebraska on Monday, Aug. 20.

BYU Storylines

After going 7-8-4 in 2017 and tying for fourth place in the West Coast Conference, the Cougars look to bounce back in 2018. BYU lost seven seniors, including National Women’s Soccer League draftees Taylor Isom (Utah Royals FC) and Nadia Gomes (Orlando Pride).

In 2018, captain Madie Siddoway Gates will look to lead the team as the only senior on the roster. In her career, she has tallied one goal, one assist and 28 shots in her 1,659 minutes on the field. In exhibition play, she led the team with two goals and two assists.

The Cougars were picked to finish third in the WCC Preseason Poll and sophomore Mikayla Colohan was named to the preseason team after earning Honorable Mention honors and being selected to the All-Freshman Team in 2017.

Cal State Fullerton Storylines

The Titans were picked to finish third in the 2018 Big West Women’s Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll behind UC Irvine and Long Beach State.

In 2017, Cal State Fullerton took the Big West Tournament Championship after beating CSUN in penalty kicks. The Titans ended the season with a 12-6-4 overall record and 4-3-1 in conference play after falling 1-0 to Pepperdine in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

In exhibition play, Cal State Fullerton went 1-1 after beating San Diego State and falling to CSUN.

BYU leads the series 6-0-2 after tying the Titans 1-1 at South Field in 2017.

Nebraska Storylines

The Huskers were picked to finish in eighth place in the Big Ten Preseason Poll and had three players named to the Preseason Honors List. In 2017, Nebraska went 9-5-5 overall and 3-3-5 in the Big 10.

Returning to the roster are 15 letterwinners, including five seniors. Seven players have also been added to the roster.

In exhibition play, the Huskers fell 3-1 to Arkansas. Nebraska opens up the season on the road at Oklahoma on Thursday, Aug. 16 before hosting the Cougars.
