Cougars-Utes open women’s soccer season on Saturday

PROVO, Utah – BYU women's soccer officially opens the 2020-21 season on Saturday, Feb. 6, against rival Utah at Zions Bank Real Academy in Herriman, Utah.
 
The game will be broadcast live at 5:05 p.m. MST live on the BYUtv app. BYU Sports Network radio coverage will be carried on BYU Radio 107.9 FM, with audio play-by-play also streaming on the BYU Cougars app and at BYUCougars.com/LiveRadio.
 
The Cougars are coming off a historic 2019 campaign that saw BYU earn a 21-1-1 overall record, a second-consecutive West Coast Conference Championship and a quarterfinal appearance in the NCAA tournament. The lone loss of the season came on the road against No. 1 ranked Stanford in the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Cardinal went on to win the College Cup, while BYU finished the year at No. 5 in the final United Soccer Coaches national rankings. 
 
Saturday’s game is also the season opener for Utah. The Utes are coming off a 8-9-4 season in 2019, which saw them advance to the first round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to No. 12 ranked Duke.

GAME NOTES
 
UTAH. The Utes are led by head coach Rich Manning, who is entering his 19th season at Utah. A former Santa Clara player, alumni and coach, Manning has guided the Utes to a NCAA Tournament berth eight times and captured three Mountain West Conference titles. Utah soccer will be kicking off its 2020-21 season against the Cougars on Saturday.
 
COUGARS VS. UTES. The last time BYU and Utah met in soccer was Sept. 6, 2019 during the regular season. The Cougars were ranked No. 10 in the country and defeated the Utes, 2-0, behind a goal and an assist from MAC Hermann trophy candidate Elise Flake. BYU holds the overall series record lead over Utah, 22-7-2.
 
SPECTATORS. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and to ensure the health and safety of the student-athletes and staff, the match will not be open to the public but will be broadcast live on the BYUtv app.
