Two Wins Open Spring Schedule for Women Kickers

Provo, Utah (March 4, 2001) Led by a goal from senior Michelle Peterson, BYU's women's soccer team opened its 2001 spring schedule with a 4-0 shutout over UNLV in Las Vegas on February 24.

Goals from Kelly Hunsberger, Lydia Ojuka and Sarah Higham lifted the women' s team to their first victory in this year's spring schedule. BYU's defense which is playing without graduating seniors Stacy Reynolds and Athelia Graham held the Lady Rebels to just one shot on goal for the entire 90 minutes of play . Peterson was the lone senior making the first trip of the Cougars spring schedule.

In their second game on the same day, the Cougars played the University of Arizona to a 1-0 shutout with the game-winning goal coming from freshman Lydia Ojuka, her second of the day.

The BYU defense headlined by sophomore Farrah Hofheins and freshmen Annie Hoerchel and Britney Holman proved tough once again, holding the Wildcats to just three shots on goal.

South Field will host four different opponents this spring with visits from USC and Loyola Marymount on March 23 with kick offs at 10 a.m., and 3 p.m., respectively. On March 30, the Cougars host Arizona State in a 2:30 p.m. game.

BYU's spring 2001 schedule finishes on the road on April 6 with two games in northern California. A 10 a.m. meeting with Cal-Berkeley, followed by a 3 p.m. matchup against St. Mary's.

The Cougars regular 2001 season opens on August 31 with a 7 p.m. game against USC.
