Soccer America, Soccer Buzz Honor Viernes

PROVO -- Senior forward Jeni Viernes was named to two national soccer teams for her performance at last week's MWC tournament. She was one of four forwards named to this week's Soccer America College Women's Team of the Week and the 2002 Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week. Each week, Soccer America and Soccer Buzz select 11 players (a goalkeeper, four defenders, two midfielders and four forwards) from around the nation to compose their separate teams of the week.

Viernes joins Aleisha Cramer-Rose as the second Cougar to be honored by Soccer Buzz this season. Viernes, who leads the team with 16 goals, earned the honors on the strength of her five goals in BYU's two MWC tournament games.

Viernes scored one goal in the Cougars' 9-2 rout of SDSU in the semifinal and then exploded for four goals to lead BYU to a 5-1 win over New Mexico in the championship.

Teri Joyce (James Madison), Sr. (1)

CAA tourney MVP sends Dukes to title game, scoring winner with 27 seconds remaining in 1-0 quarterfinal victory over Virginia Commonwealth and winner with 38 seconds to go in 2-1 semifinal upset of top-seeded William & Mary. Triumph over George Mason secures NCAA berth.

Andrea Morrison (Furman), Fr. (1)

SoCon tournament MVP contributes goal and assist in 3-0 quarterfinal win over East Tennessee State, nets winner in 2-1 semifinal victory over UNC Greensboro, adds goal and assist in 3-0 title-game win over College of Charleston as Paladins make it 11 wins in a row and claim NCAA berth.

Goalkeeper

Michelle Mattos (UNC Asheville), Fr. (1)

Makes 35 saves in four games -- three in penalty-kick shootouts -- as the Bulldogs play Western Carolina to a non-conference tie, then score PK triumphs over Elon and top-seeded Liberty to advance to the Big South tournament final. Eleven saves keep UNCA close in 2-0 loss to Radford in title game.

Defenders

Jenna Cooper (Nebraska), Jr. (1)

Scores only goal in Cornhuskers' upset of Texas A&M in Big 12 tournament final, adds assist in quarterfinal win over Kansas; defensive leader in OT win over Texas in semifinals.

Keeley Dowling (Tennessee), Soph. (1)

Goal with a minute to go before PKs delivers first SEC tournament title to Lady Vols in 2-1 win over Florida; anchors defense in 1-0 wins over Georgia and Kentucky.

Leslie Gaston (North Carolina), Sr. (2)

ACC tournament MVP after leading dominant Tar Heels to shutouts over Wake Forest, Maryland and Clemson to win conference title.

Meghan Ogilvie (Richmond), Soph. (1)

Atlantic 10 tournament MVP clears ball off the goal line to preserve Spiders' 1-0 semifinal win over Dayton, scores two goals and adds an assist in 3-1 title-game victory over Rhode Island to nail down NCAA berth.
