Women's Track and Field Signs Four New Recruits

PROVO -- The BYU women's track and field team has signed four new recruits for the 2003-2004 season. The four top recruits are Juleen Bailey, Jessica Borchers, Julie Cameron and Amy Menlove.

"I think this is one of the best recruiting classes we've had, and they will have a strong impact," said women's track and field head coach Craig Poole.

Bailey is from Nampa, Idaho and has put up personal best marks of 13-2 in the pole vault, 17-0 in the long jump and 25.8 in the 200-meter dash.

Borchers, also from Idaho, lettered four years in cross country and track at Borah High School in Boise. She won both the state and regional Junior Olympic Championships in the 100 and the 200-meter dash from 1998 to 2001. She holds the Idaho District III record in the 200 and the Boise City record in the 100, with a time of 11.78. The previous 100-meter record was 11.84, set in 1984. Borchers' 100-meter time qualified her to run at the Junior National Championships at Stanford University in 2002. She also garnered two state championships as a member of the 4x200-meter relay team and the 4x400-meter relay team. Her best time in the 200 is 25.3 and her best time in the 400-meter run is 58.9.

Julie Cameron moved to Pittsburg, Pa., as a junior in high school and quickly made an impact at Upper Saint Clair. After discover unusual speed and endurance as a soccer athlete, Cameron tried track. She set the Western Pennsylvania record in the 800-meter run and placed third at the Pennsylvania State Championships with a time of 2:10. She was named All-State in track and field for the 800-meter run. Her best time in the 1,600-meter run is 5:05.

Menlove, a Sandy, Utah native, set the Utah state record in the long jump (19-2 1/2) in 2000. She was the long jump state champion in 2001 and the runner up in 2000. In 2002, she captured state championships titles in the 100, the 200, the 400 and the long jump. She finished third at the national meet in the long jump and was named a high school All-American. Menlove also won the long jump at the Simplot Games two years in a row. Her personal best marks are 20-1 1/2 in the long jump, 7.61 in the 60-meter, 11.77 in the 100-meter and 24.31 in the 200-meter.

All four recruits have signed letters of intent and will graduate from high school in 2003.
